FAQs

Q: What is the Libby Video Club?
A: Libby Video Club is a private nonprofit group (501(c)(4)) that maintains over-the-air television translators on Sheldon Mountain and on Indian Head Mountain. It serves the town of Libby, Montana.

Q: Do I need a digital T.V. to watch over-the-air television in Libby?
A: Nope, not at this time (as of Dec., 2009). Even though the digital transition has already occurred, your old analog T.V. will still work just fine, and you do NOT need to use one of those digital-to-analog converter boxes, either. The digital-to-analog conversion is done entirely by the Video Club's translators on Sheldon Mountain and on Indian Head Mountain. An analog (UHF) signal is broadcast to Libby's T.V. sets.

Q: Why is the Libby Video Club asking for donations?
A: It is the only source of funding for the organization. The Video Club has been underfunded for many years. Currently, the suggested donation amount is forty dollars per year. The Libby Video Club was created back in the 1950s, at a time when cable T.V. and satellite T.V. didn't yet exist. Because of REALLY poor planning and a total lack of foresight, Libby chose not to fund the television translators through taxes. Instead, the community decided to rely solely on donations from Libby's viewers. This was a BAD idea. Up until the 1980s, enough donations were flowing in to the Club's coffers to adequately fund the translators (the Video Club refers to the donations as "user fees", but in reality they are just donations). However, in the 1980s, when cable TV and satellite TV finally came to Libby, donations to the Video Club plummeted to practically nothing. In contrast, the nearby town of Troy, Montana had the wisdom and the foresight to fund its TV translators through taxes (each Troy-area property owner pays a paltry amount - - around $5.00 per year - - to fund Troy's translators). Therefore, Troy's translators have remained well-funded, even after the arrival of cable TV and satellite TV. Unfortunately, Libby residents have been very uncharitable to the Libby Video Club. Today, the organization is barely existing, living essentially hand-to-mouth.
